Elizabeth City Pasquotank Public Schools include seven elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools with a combined enrollment of more than 6,000 students. Five of its public schools have been named Schools of Distinction and one an Honor School of Excellence. In higher education, Elizabeth City is home to three colleges: Elizabeth City State University, an historically black college, Mid-Atlantic Christian University, a Christian college, and The College of the Albemarle, a community college.

Albemarle Hospital is the region's medical center, serving seven counties and more than 130,000 people. With its dedicated staff of more than 1,000 employees, Albemarle Hospital has a medical staff of more than 100 physicians, representing nearly 30 specialties.
