Two Elizabeth City equipment makers – Hockmeyer Equipment Corp. and Hoffer Flow Control – are stars in the international business world.
Hockmeyer began in the Bronx and opened its operation in Elizabeth City in 1984.
“Hockmeyer Equipment has been in business over 60 years, producing mixing and processing equipment,” says Rick van de Sande, vice president of manufacturing.
“These are for liquids, [ranging from] laboratory-table-top size to large production machinery for paints, inks, adhesives, food, pharmaceutical and other related industries.”
The company has customers in South America, Central America, Puerto Rico, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
“We currently employ 45 people in Elizabeth City and have direct sales people in the U.S., as well as independent representatives in the U.S. and overseas,” van de Sande says.
Hoffer Flow Control also sells products around the world. Hoffer was founded in 1969 in New Jersey and relocated to Elizabeth City in 1992. The company builds and sells flow meters to customers in the United States and more than 70 other countries.
The U.S. Navy and its major ship-building contractors, such as Northrop Grumman Newport News, as well as NASA and the U.S. Air Force, are among its customers. Hoffer meters, which measure the flow of liquids and gases, are used in most Navy ships and submarines for fuel flow measurement and ballast control.
