In September 2004, the Pasquotank became the first river in the country to receive historical designation from the National Park Service. It was for its role in the Underground Railroad. Since then, similar recognition has been given to Great Dismal Swamp.
The Underground Railroad was the secret effort to assist black slaves fleeing captivity before and during the Civil War. The Albemarle region was a key link in the effort because of its proximity to shipping routes, and the dense and impenetrable swampland.
